To gear up for the Grand Départ, East Barnby Outdoor Centre will be holding five different mountain bike events throughout half term, from rides to skills workshops at its base in Whitby and at The Moors National Park Centre. Staying on the cycling theme, Sutton Bank Bikes (based at Sutton Bank National Park Centre) is offering 10% discount on bike hire during the May half term provided people pre-book by 23 May. It will also be running a Tour de France treasure hunt – spot various yellow bike parts around the centre to be rewarded with a tasty treat. Call 01845 597759 for more details.

On Tuesday 27 and Thursday 29 May, East Barnby is offering a range of activities such as canoeing the Esk, sailing, mountain biking, climbing and bushcraft for children aged nine to 16 and on Saturday 31 May, in conjunction with the National Trust, it will be running a sea kayak adventure from Boggle Hole to Ravenscar.

Families can finish the half term week with a geocaching treasure hunt at the National Trust Centre, Ravenscar using a GPS unit to search for clues and goodies along a two mile walk.

Sally Ann Smith, the National Park Authority’s Events and Exhibitions Co-ordinator, said:

The North York Moors is fast gaining a reputation as one of the best mountain bike areas in the country so whether you’re a beginner looking for tips on how to get started or a seasoned rider looking for ideas of new routes, come along to one of our special events. If cycling isn’t for you, there are plenty of other activities taking place that will enable you to spend some quality time with your kids in the great outdoors.”

Pre-booking is required for all events apart from the archery and geocache treasure hunt. For National Park Authority events people should call 01439 772738 and for events organised by East Barnby (mountain bike and adventure days) call 01947 893333.
